Three prayers for forgiveness

A prayer for forgiveness for those coming to faith for the first time

God in heaven,

The Bible says that all have sinned and fall short of Your glory (Romans ch3 v23) and when I measure up my life to that of Jesus, who was without sin (Hebrews ch4 v15), it is easy to see that this is so. I am truly sorry for all that I have said, thought and done which has been wrong. I understand that any sin deserves the punishment of death (Romans ch6 v23) but that Jesus, in His love for me, died on the cross and took that punishment upon Himself in my place . Jesus, I accept the forgiveness and eternal life which is offered instead and believe that You are now my Saviour. I commit myself to You in return and recognise You as my Lord. Come into my life. The Bible says that, “if you confesses with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.” (Romans ch10 v9) I have confessed such a thing and I believe that Jesus is raised from the dead so that I can have new life, I therefore know with confidence that I am saved. The Bible also says, “If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in Heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!” (Luke ch11 v13) I therefore also ask You to fill me with Your Holy Spirit in accordance with this scripture. Come and fill me to over-flowing as I praise God so that I will be able to live the life that you have called me to. In Jesus name.

Amen.

A general prayer for forgiveness for those who are already Christians

Heavenly Father,

I come before you to ask for forgiveness following the example that Jesus gave His disciples. Sometimes it is hard to admit that I am in need of forgiveness but I know that I am deceived if I think that there is no sin at work in me. Even though I have received forgiveness for my wrong-doings when I received Jesus into my life as my Lord and Saviour, there are times when I become ensnared again. I need to keep coming before You in repentance and commitment to turn away from my sinful ways. Your Word says that if we confess our sins You are faithful and will forgive us of those sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. I come before You now asking for forgiveness knowing that You are eager to do so. Lead me away from temptation and into a life of praise. Fill me once again with your Holy Spirit so that I may be fully equipped for every good work that You have prepared for me to do. In Jesus name I ask these things.

 Amen.

A prayer for forgiveness for a specific wrong

Father God,

I come before You now as a person bearing the weight of guilt which has become mine following my wrong doing. I come humbly seeking forgiveness and restoration in accordance with Your mercy and grace. I confess that I have (name your wrong-doing) and I am truly sorry. I turn from that path of unrighteousness. I receive your forgiveness and commit myself once again to Your Lordship over my life. Your Word says that You have “poured out [Your] love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit,” (Romans ch5 v5) and I pray that Your love will triumph over the feelings of guilt which seek to break me down. If ever I am tempted to look back at my sin, overwhelm me with Your love so that I cannot take my eyes off You. Thank you so much for forgiving me as I ask these things in the glorious name of Jesus Christ.

Amen
